There are many ways to get involved as a member of DAM to support the club.
Represent DAM At Swim MeetsBe a team player! Prepare for and attend swim meets whenever you can. This is a great way to meet other DAM swimmers, test your skills, and have fun. If you've never participated in a swim meet it can be intimidating. But don't let that stop you. There are many DAM members who were age group swimmers (meaning they compteted in their youth, or high school) and who are more than happy to guide you through your first swim meet. Coaches are more than willing to help you prepare for a swim meet, to help you learn how to go off the block, do a flip turn, and pace yourself. There's definitely some things you need to learn before competing, and it will help if you feel you've prepared. Participating on a relay can be the thrill of a lifetime. You will be matched up with swimmers your age and ability, and swim a relay race as other DAM members cheer you on. This is a great way to get points for DAM and show your support while having a lot of fun with your teammates. |
Become A Second Life GuardThe City of Davis requires that there are 2 life guards available at every workout. We are not able to conduct a workout if 2 life guards are not present. The coach on deck is a life guard and a second guardparticipates in the workout. You can become a second guard by getting certified and when you come to a workout if the coach does not already know you are asked to alert them to your status as a second guard. Certification classes are offered on an as-needed basis. This is a great way for you to support our team and get your workouts in while you do so! |
Become A Board MemberThe DAM Board of Directors consists of 7 members, each serving a 2 year term. Each fall we ask for members who might be interested in serving on the board to submit a letter of interest, and a statement of intent. Prior to the annual holiday party, members are asked to vote for their candidate of choice. The winners are announced at the holiday party. The board meets once a month, and members participate in various tasks throughout their term. Each member is assigned a specific responsibility and is expected to do what is necessary to meet that responsibiltiy. Assignments may include being the liason with the city, participating on the Aquatics Council, being the board secretary and documenting and submitting the minutes for the monthly meetings, etc. The time committment varies throughout the year, depending on the current events underway, or any issues the board may be dealing with. You are expected to attend and participate at every monthly meeting as well as fulfill your individual assignments. Becoming a board member is a great way to give back to the team, as well as learn more about how the team functions, and how you might use your skills to contribute. |
Volunteer at DAM EventsThroughout the year, DAM hosts many events that rely on member volunteeers. The big one is the Lake Berryessa Open Water Swim that DAM hosts every year. The Lake Berryessa swim requires an army of volunteers, before, during and after the event. We usually start preparations in January, and by the time the date arrives there are many volunteers assigned to tasks. Even if you plan to swim you can volunteer and be relieved of your duties at your swim time. The Berryessa swim is a fun event, with hundreds of swimmers showing up for a good swim, and a good time. The annual Summer Splash swim meet is held in August and is either a long or short course meet depending on the availability of a pool. Putting on a swim meet is a big effort, from setup to tear down and requires a lot of volunteers to be successful. If you are not familiar with swim meets, don't worry. Timers are always needed, and all you need to know is how to use a stop watch and write down numbers! We serve refreshments to timers and meet officials, so volunteers are needed to make that happen. Throughout the year hosts social events like the holiday party and summer barbecue. This is a chance for members to come together wearing something other than a swim suit! Social events provide an opportunity to get to know other swimmers, and to socialize with your friends. But again, it takes volunteers to put it on. |
